In daily consultations, we often encounter a type of client who asks with a product image: "Can this silicone product be made?" When we look at the image, we find that it is actually made of TPU material.
This is not the client's fault. Silicone and TPU do look very similar in appearance, both being soft and elastic materials, and the products made from them look quite alike.
But if you treat them as the same thing, you might stumble in product development. Today, let's clarify these two materials.
Different application scenarios: Which material is better for which product?
Silicone is better for:
Maternity products: nipples, teething toys, baby food spoons - requires absolute safety and high-temperature sterilization
Worn-on-body: smart watch straps, eyeglass nose pads - requires skin-friendly softness
Kitchen products: baking molds, scrapers, steaming pads - requires high-temperature resistance
Medical products: catheters, masks - requires biocompatibility
High-end buttons: remote controls, car dashboards - requires good feel and durability
TPU is better for:
Mobile phone cases: transparent cases, anti-drop cases - requires high transparency and wear resistance
Footwear materials: shoe soles, shoe pads - requires high wear resistance and elasticity
Bag accessories: zipper pulls, bag edges - requires flexibility and strength
Industrial hoses: pneumatic tubes, hydraulic tubes - requires oil resistance and pressure resistance
How to distinguish between silicone and TPU?
If you have a product in your hand and are unsure of its material, you can quickly determine it using the following methods:
Method 1: Fire test (the most direct)
Take a small piece of edge material and burn it with a lighter:
Silicone: After burning, it turns into white powder (silicon dioxide), with almost no black smoke and a very faint smell
TPU: After burning, there is black smoke, a pungent smell, and the residue after burning is a sticky black residue
Method 2: Stretch test
Pull the material forcefully:
Silicone: Has good elasticity, recovers quickly after stretching, and does not expand after tearing
TPU: Has good elasticity, but tears easily along the crack
Method 3: Temperature test
Put it in boiling water for a few minutes:
Silicone: Its performance remains basically unchanged, still soft and elastic
TPU: It becomes softer at high temperatures, and may harden after cooling
Method 4: Nail test
Scrape the surface with your fingernail:
Silicone: The scratch is not obvious, or recovers quickly
TPU: Leaves a noticeable scratch

Have high requirements for wear resistance
Budget is limited, cost-sensitive
The temperature requirement of the product is not high (used in room temperature environment)
