“For my product, should I use silicone or plastic?”

There is no one-size-fits-all answer, because each material has its own strengths. Today, we’ll walk you through several aspects to help you decide how to choose between silicone and plastic.

When Should You Choose Silicone?
1. The product comes into contact with skin
Silicone is skin‑friendly and feels warm, not cold like plastic. Therefore, for any product that directly touches the skin, silicone is often the better choice:

Wearables: smartwatch bands, eyeglass temple tips, wristbands

Baby & mother products: pacifiers, teethers, baby spoons

Medical devices: masks, earplugs, catheters

If a watch band were made of plastic, it would be uncomfortable to wear for long periods and would stick to sweaty skin.

2. The product needs to be drop‑resistant and shock‑absorbing
Silicone has excellent elasticity and cushioning properties. When dropped, it absorbs impact and protects internal components. Plastic, on the other hand, cracks or breaks easily.

Phone cases: silicone cases protect against drops; plastic cases do not

Remote controls: silicone buttons provide good tactile feedback; plastic buttons feel poor

Industrial parts: shock absorbers, sealing rings

3. The product needs to withstand high and low temperatures
Silicone has a wide temperature range, typically from -40°C to 230°C. You can take it straight from the freezer into the oven — silicone handles it.

Plastic cannot: ordinary plastic deforms when heated and becomes brittle in the cold.

Kitchenware: baking molds, silicone spatulas, ice trays

Outdoor gear: cold‑resistant, UV‑resistant silicone accessories

4. The product needs anti‑slip properties
Silicone surfaces have high friction and are not slippery. Plastic surfaces are smooth and become even more slippery when wet.

When Should You Choose Plastic?
1. The product needs high rigidity and shape retention
Plastic has much greater stiffness than silicone. For products that must bear loads and hold their shape, plastic is more suitable.

Structural housings: appliance shells, toy casings

Load‑bearing parts: chair legs, box frames

Precision components: gears, snap‑fits

2. The product needs transparency or high gloss
Silicone can be translucent, but high transparency and high gloss are where plastic excels.

Transparent packaging boxes: PET, acrylic

High‑gloss shells: ABS, PC plastics

Mirror finishes: plastics can be chrome‑plated or high‑gloss polished

High‑transparency silicone is possible, but it is expensive, the process is complex, and it yellows over time.

3. The product needs low cost, high volume production
The raw material cost of plastic is typically lower than silicone, and injection molding is extremely efficient for mass production.

Disposables: plastic cups, plastic cutlery

Everyday items: hangers, storage bins

Toys: ordinary plastic toys

Silicone can also be injection‑molded for high efficiency, but the material cost remains higher than ordinary plastic.

4. The product demands precise dimensional stability
Plastic has much better dimensional stability after molding and does not easily deform. Because silicone is an elastomer, it shrinks slightly after demolding, so its dimensional accuracy is lower than plastic.

Precision mating parts: components that must fit perfectly

Threaded structures: plastic can produce precise threads; silicone cannot

Can You Have the Best of Both Worlds?
Some products need the rigidity of plastic and the soft touch of silicone. Overmolding is the solution:

Inner hard part (plastic) : provides structural strength and keeps the shape

Outer soft layer (silicone) : gives a soft feel and adds anti‑slip, drop‑protection

A classic example: electric toothbrush handles — a rigid plastic core overmolded with a layer of silicone for a comfortable grip that also survives drops.
