How Many Checks Does a Qualified Silicone Product Have to Pass?

Have you ever wondered how many inspections a seemingly simple silicone product—whether it's a phone case, a remote control button, a baby pacifier, or a kitchen spatula—goes through before it reaches your hands?

Today, let's take a look behind the scenes at Hongxiangda's quality control process and see how many checks a qualified silicone product has to pass before it leaves our factory.

Check 1: Raw Material Incoming Inspection
Quality starts with raw materials.

Whether a silicone product is good or not depends first on the quality of the raw materials used. Our material suppliers go through a strict screening process. Every batch of raw material that enters our factory undergoes the following checks:

Visual Inspection: Check if packaging is intact, if the material color is normal, and if there are any foreign objects mixed in.

Performance Testing: Each batch is sampled and tested to confirm key specifications such as hardness and tensile strength meet standards.

Batch Number Recording: The batch number, production date, and supplier information for every batch are recorded in detail. If any issues arise, we can quickly trace them back.

Our Principle: Raw materials that do not meet standards are never allowed into the workshop.

This first check eliminates potential problems at the source.

Check 2: Mixing Process Control
Once the raw materials are approved, the next step is mixing. Although you can't see the finished product at this stage, this step directly determines the product's core properties: color, hardness, elasticity, and more.

Throughout the mixing process, we monitor closely:

Additive Ratios: Curing agent, color pigment, and other additives are added strictly according to the formula. Not a gram more or less.

Mixing Uniformity: Our mixing technicians constantly observe the compound's condition to ensure additives are completely incorporated, with no color spots or particles.

Temperature Control: If the mixing temperature is too high, the compound may vulcanize prematurely (scorch). If it's too low, the additives won't mix evenly. Our technicians adjust based on weather conditions and the characteristics of the compound.

Resting Time: The mixed compound cannot be used immediately. It needs to rest for 8-24 hours to allow the additives to fully penetrate. Until the time is up, it doesn't go to the molding machine.

This check ensures the compound itself has a "good foundation."

Check 3: First Article Inspection
The mold is set up, the compound is ready, and production begins. But when the first product comes out, mass production doesn't start just yet.

Every product must pass a First Article Inspection before full production:

Dimensional Measurement: Using calipers, projectors, and other tools, we measure key dimensions such as length, width, height, and hole diameters to ensure they match the drawings.

Visual Inspection: Check for bubbles, contaminants, short shots, flash, and other surface issues.

Tactile Test: Feel the product to ensure the mold line is smooth and there are no rough edges.

Functional Test: For buttons, test the pressing force and rebound; for seals, test the sealing performance; for watch bands, test the clasp strength.

Our Principle: If the first article fails, mass production does not begin.

This check ensures that the mold and process are "on the right track."

Check 4: In-Process Inspection
Mass production is underway, but inspections don't stop. Our inspectors regularly visit each machine to conduct spot checks:

Hourly Sampling: Each machine and each product is sampled at least once per hour to check whether dimensions, appearance, and feel remain stable.

Changeover Checks: When changing molds or switching to a new batch of compound, a new first article inspection is conducted.

Non-Conformance Handling: If any defective product is found, production is stopped immediately to identify the cause. Production resumes only after the issue is resolved.

This check ensures that the production process "stays on track."

Check 5: Post-Processing Inspection
After the products come out of the mold, they go through post-processing steps such as grinding, spray coating, laser engraving, and screen printing. Each step has its own inspection standards:

After Grinding: Check that mold lines are smoothed, the surface has no grinding marks, and edges and corners remain intact.

After Spray Coating: Check that the coating is uniform, the feel is smooth, and adhesion is strong (tested with cross-cut tape method).

After Laser Engraving: Check that characters are clear, positioned correctly, and backlight is uniform.

After Screen Printing: Check that patterns are complete, colors are accurate, and there is no ink bleeding or missing prints.

After each post-processing step, the products must pass inspection before moving to the next step.

This check ensures that surface finishing is "done right."

Check 6: 100% Visual Inspection
After all processes are completed, products enter the 100% Visual Inspection stage.

Yes, every single product—not just samples.

Our inspectors sit at light tables and check each product one by one:

Appearance: Check for scratches, dirt, bubbles, short shots, and residual flash.

Dimensions: For critical dimensions, we use gauges to measure each product.

Feel: Touch each product to ensure the surface is smooth and the mold line is flat.

Color: Compare against standard color chips to confirm the color is correct.

Special Functions: For products requiring backlighting, we check the light transmission effect; for products requiring sealing, we conduct sealing tests.

This check weeds out individual defective products that may arise during production.

Check 7: Packaging Inspection
Once products pass inspection, they are ready for packaging. But the packaging process itself requires inspection:

Before Packaging: Confirm that products are clean, with no fingerprints or oil residue.

Packaging Materials: Check that packaging bags, blister trays, and inner liners are not damaged or dirty.

Packaging Method: Pack according to the quantity and method specified by the customer.

Outer Carton Labeling: Verify that label information (product name, quantity, batch number, date) is accurate.

This check ensures that products are "ready for shipment."

Check 8: Outgoing Quality Control
Once products are packaged, they undergo one final Outgoing Quality Control (OQC) inspection before shipment:

Random Sampling: Randomly select samples from each batch.

Comprehensive Re-inspection: Re-measure key dimensions, re-check appearance, and re-test functions.

Data Recording: All inspection data is recorded and can be traced with the shipment.

Release Standard: Only when the sample passes does the entire batch get approved for shipment.

This check is the final gate before the products leave the factory.
