A Comprehensive Analysis of Spray Oil Application Process

In the previous issue, we discussed what the "touch feel" of silicone products actually refers to, and mentioned the dimension of touch feel. After the article was published, many customers sent me private messages asking:

"What exactly is the 'sprayed touch oil'? "

"Is there a significant difference between spraying and not spraying?"

"Does all silicone products need to be sprayed?"

Today, we will specifically talk about this seemingly simple but actually crucial process - spraying touch oil.

Let's answer a core question first: What is the purpose of spraying touch oil?

In a nutshell: Spraying touch oil is to add a thin protective coating on the surface of the silicone product to improve the touch feel and performance.

The surface of untreated silicone is rough and sticky to the touch, and it is particularly prone to absorbing dust and lint. After spraying touch oil, the surface becomes smooth, fine, and slippery without stickiness, and it is less likely to get dusty.

This process is equivalent to wearing an "invisible invisible coat" for the silicone product.

Why does silicone need to be sprayed with touch oil?

Many customers will ask: "The silicone itself has good touch feel. Why do we need to spray an additional layer?"

The answer is: The good touch feel of silicone refers to its softness and elasticity. However, its surface characteristics actually have many shortcomings.

Specifically, spraying touch oil solves three major problems of silicone:

Problem 1: The surface is rough and has a poor touch feel

The friction coefficient of silicone is high, and it has a sluggish feeling when touched. In professional terms, it is called "stiff hand". This roughness is not a major problem in some products, but it can significantly lower the user experience in products that need frequent touching, such as watch straps, phone cases, and remote control buttons.

After spraying touch oil: The surface becomes smooth and slippery, and there is no resistance when fingers glide over it. The touch experience is significantly improved.

Problem 2: It is prone to absorbing dust and lint

Silicone materials are prone to generating static electricity during the molding process, and the static electricity will adsorb dust and lint in the air. That's why some silicone products get a layer of dust after two days and are full of lint when taken out of the pocket.

After spraying touch oil: Touch oil can effectively reduce the generation of static electricity, and dust is less likely to adhere. Even if it gets dusty, the smooth surface is easier to clean.

Problem 3: Insufficient wear resistance

Silicone without surface treatment will develop wear marks on the surface after long-term use, affecting the appearance and touch feel.

After spraying touch oil: Touch oil forms a protective film, enhancing the wear resistance of the surface, and the product becomes more durable.
